October 29, 2021 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the Western States Scientific Review Workgroup approved the use of all three COVID-19 vaccine types for booster doses. The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) adopted the federal recommendations to allow eligible individuals to receive a booster dose of the Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The FDA and CDC suggest that “mixing & matching” boosters is safe and effective. Booster doses do not have to be the same vaccine type as your initial vaccine. For example, individuals who received a Pfizer or Moderna primary series can receive a Johnson & Johnson booster and those who received a Johnson & Johnson vaccine can receive a Pfizer or Moderna booster. It is important to note that the Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson boosters are full doses, while the Moderna booster is a half dose.

It is recommended that everyone 18 and older who received a one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine two months ago, get a booster dose. The following at-risk individuals who received a two-dose primary series of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine six months ago, are now eligible for a booster dose:

• Individuals 65 years and older

• Individuals 18 years and older who live in long-term care settings

• Individuals 18 years and older who have underlying medical conditions

• Individuals 18 years and older who work or live in high-risk settings

Local healthcare providers including Confluence Health (Confluence), Columbia Valley Community Health (CVCH), Cascade Medical (Cascade) and Lake Chelan Health (LCH) are working with Chelan-Douglas Health District (CDHD) to offer equitable access for all three booster vaccines to the residents of Chelan and Douglas Counties. CVCH
